2018 Junior Engineering Olympiad

For middle school students in grades 6-8. Sunday, April 8, 2018, 1:00pm – 4:30pm. Takes place at Sage Hill School.

Modeled after the Science Olympiad, the Junior Engineering Olympiad features 6 different “events.” Registered students are eligible to participate in 2 of the following “events.”

Bottle Balloon Vehicle: Students will work together to construct vehicles powered by balloon propulsion, and compete to see how far they can travel.

Circuit Circus: New! Students will learn about the functions of various electrical parts and about the operation of a circuit, and will then be challenged to build special circuits in a race against other teams.

Marshmallow Towers: Students will compete to see who can design and build the strongest structure using marshmallows and toothpicks.

Mystery Architecture: Teams are given an envelope containing mystery materials. Using these materials, each team is tasked with constructing the tallest possible self-sustaining tower.

Water Filtration: Students will be taught the process of commercial water filtration from reservoir to tap. Additionally, students will construct their own makeshift water filtration tube.

Shockingly Fast: New! Students will create their own electric motor out of a battery, copper wire, and magnets
